Groups and Activities

In serving God, we offer care and support to those in our community and to those in need, both here and overseas. We enjoy working together in a variety of ways.

Tuesday Lunch Club

Our monthly lunches continue to be very popular with people from our community, both church members and others. They are held on the second Tuesday in the month at 12.30 pm. Everyone is welcome, but it is best to book in advance. Contact Linda on 020 7274 6971. We would welcome more volunteers to join our catering team.

Amnesty International Group

The Amnesty International Group in our Church no longer meets together regularly, but individually we write letters to Heads of State, Ambassadors, etc. about men and women whom Amnesty International considers to be prisoners of conscience. Towards the end of November we meet to write Christmas cards to people being held prisoner throughout the world.

Fair Trade

In co-operation with Christ Church East Dulwich, we run regular Fair Trade stalls after the morning service, and the purchases made there help workers in third world countries to get a fair price for their labours. Some of us also help in the Fair Trade Centre at Christ Church, where there is also a café. Click here for more information.

Trade Justice

We are part of a group of activists including a dozen local churches. At a meeting at Westminster, we asked for

  • fairer terms for the less developed countries in trade agreements with the EU
  • the speedy appointment of an Ombudsman to prevent unfair purchasing practices by the supermarkets,
  • clamping down on tax avoidance by multi-nationals in developing countries.

House Groups

A House Group meets monthly from 10.00 till 12.00 on the first Tuesday of the month. New members are welcome. Contact Margaret on 020 8693 2618.

Christian Aid

We collect throughout  the neighbourhood once every year, during Christian Aid Week.  Each year a group of church members takes part in the CA Circle the City sponsored walk, and we also hold a Young People's Talent Show to raise money. Last year we raised £3,159.58.

Prayer Fellowship

Every Thursday at 9.30 am, some of us meet to pray together for ourselves, our community and the wider world. On the first and third Thursdays of the month we meet at St Faith’s, also in Red Post Hill, to share in their mid-week Communion. On the other Thursdays, we are joined here at Herne Hill by the St Faith’s people. The meeting is always followed by coffee and a friendly chat.

Adult Choir

We occasionally get an Adult Choir together to sing at special services such as our annual Carols by Candlelight and our Good Friday Choral Service.  Singers from other churches and choirs in the neighbourhood often join us for these occasions. For our Good Friday service last year we sang extracts from Handel's Messiah.

Knitting Circle and Prayer Shawl Ministry

The HHUC Knitting Circle meets in the afternoon on the 3rd Wednesday of the month to knit, crochet and chat over a cup of tea.  The aim is to knit items such as hats, scarves and shawls for anyone in need of warmth or comfort.  New members are welcome. There is currently no leader for this group so they are not meeting.

Our work with children also reaches out into the community.

We  welcome community users of our premises. Contact the office on 020 7738 7434 or email

We hold Sunday morning services at 10.30 am which last for about an hour, followed by refreshments.
